Cambrian Go Karts thank you sale
CAMBRIAN GO
KARTS NEWS
Cambrian Go Karts would like to take a moment to thank all
of its loyal customers who race with us week in and week
out, also the ones who don't necessarily race with us but
are generous to give our parts trailer the business that
they do week after week. We are very aware that with out
you, we don't exist, and it is why we strive to be at the
track and available for your questions and as well as hands
on help. It has been my greatest honor to mentor all of our
young drivers who have come from not really knowing which
pedal does what....to making a perfect pass and winning some
of the biggest races in our region, over and over again.
Remembering that this is a family affair and fun sport is
what we need to keep in the back of our mind, we cant do
this without each others help, its not fun to do it all by
yourself and the great feeling of winning doesn't last very
long if there is no one to share it with. That is why I love
my business, I am surrounded by my wife and two beautiful
girls everyday at the races and I am followed by all of the
incredible families who take such good care of me all day
while I get to help there son or daughter reach there goals
on and off the track. We have nothing but fun in our camp
and invite anyone who would like to join us to do so.
The reason I say all of this is to open up an opportunity to

9-29-10 K&N
Filters to Awards $210,000 in Sponsorships to young Racers
Riverside,
California - K&N Filters announces a program to provide up
to 18 young racers sponsorships from $5,000 to $25,000 for
the 2011 racing season. K&N Filters has a long heritage of
providing ongoing support for grassroots racing across
America. K&N Filter's involvement in motorsports ranges from
lawn mower racing to the top tiers of NASCAR.
In alliance with the national NASCAR focused driver talent
search conducted by Ron Sutton's Winner's Circle, top young
drivers will be selected to participate in driver try outs
at the 2010 Shoot-Out. Selected drivers joining the
development program will be developed, groomed, coached,
tested, trained and raced in USAC and NASCAR series.
"This $210,000 in driver development sponsorships is just
the next step in K&N Filters long history of supporting
young racers," stated Tony Yorkman, Sports Marketing Manager
at K&N Engineering. "This is a tough economy in general, and
really tough for motorsports. The leadership of K&N Filters
has decided we are in this for the long haul and young
racers are our future. We are not going to stop caring about
them because money is tight."
Many successful car racers today, honed their skills driving
something smaller, such as Karts, Legends, Dwarf Cars,
Quarter Midgets, Mini/Micro-Sprints, Dirt Karts and other
forms of youth racing. K&N Filters is awarding six free
spots in the 2010 RSWC Talent Search Shoot-Out to young
racers from various forms of youth motorsports.
"We enjoy being involved in the USAC and NASCAR racing
series for a lot of reasons. One being K&N air & oil filters
are the top choice by the competitors. The other is seeing
these young talented racers develop their racecraft and win
races on their rise to racing careers. The team at K&N
Filters loves being a part of that," stated Bob Harris,
Corporate Race Accounts Manager for K&N Filters. "Ron
Sutton's Winner's Circle Shoot Out is the top program to
find and develop talented young drivers. We are once again
utilizing their program to help us find and assist talented
young racers with K&N's awards."
Ron Sutton's Winner's Circle is known in racing circles as
the largest, most comprehensive, most established and best
connected NASCAR focused Talent Scout and Driver Career
Development Program. In the last year, RSWC has coordinated
a Talent Combine in North Carolina with four top RSWC
drivers testing with NASCAR Cup Teams, an individual RSWC
driver test with a NASCAR Cup Development Team and guided a
female RSWC driver successfully into the fully funded NASCAR
Drive for Diversity program. In addition, two RSWC Drivers
secured career building sponsors to sign with top teams for
2011.
The Shoot-Out process is designed to identify talented,
young, up and coming drivers from across the United States
and Canada with the potential and commitment to achieve a
driving career in NASCAR. With the news of these
sponsorships to be awarded, RSWC has extended the deadline
for drivers to submit resumes to October 25th, 2010. RSWC
expects to receive more than the 700 resumes that they have
in the past, and narrow it down to approximately 40 drivers
to test. The Shoot-Out is conducted in October and November,
in three types of race cars, on a California paved short
oval track.
"This is the third year K&N Filters have increased their
support. By offering over $200,000 in sponsorships to
deserving young racers, they are helping make a lot of
dreams come true, and careers get launched. This is just
further proof of K&N Filter's support for grassroots racing
and commitment to racers. We are very excited and honored to
help develop young drivers' careers with K&N's support. As
always ... we're looking for talent. Not the most money, not
a set number of drivers ... just young talent that has real
potential to go all the way to NASCAR Sprint Cup," said Ron
Sutton.
Day one of the Shoot-Out includes a workshop for parents and
drivers, "The Real World Good, Bad & Ugly of Driver Career
Development" and a training course for drivers on driving
strategies to succeed in the Shoot-Out and crew terminology.
Three separate tests for the young drivers include body fat
fitness, a written problem solving test and psychological
analysis.
Days two and three are on track, with drivers getting five
20-lap sessions in one of three types of race cars, with
coaching, to show their talent. A dozen Judges evaluate the
drivers on 45 points, with the key areas being coachability,
accurate feedback, focus, motivation, training retention,
communication skills, personality, aggressiveness, learning
rate, confidence and lap times.
The talented drivers selected for the RSWC development
program through the Shoot-Out will have a NASCAR career
focused training program designed specifically for their
age, experience and development stage, then be placed with a
top team in the racing series that fits best, including
various classes in USAC and NASCAR series.
The career development program consists of 12 veteran driver
coaches, 26 classroom training topics, well known trainers
and eight organizations fielding 24 race teams, all
dedicated to develop drivers to a NASCAR career. The teams
are a balance of Open Wheel and Stock Car oval track race
teams, with Road Racing added, to develop highly versatile
and accomplished winning drivers.
Young winning drivers ages 11 to 20, and their parents, are
encouraged to get all the information and answers to common
questions from the web-site, then submit their resume in
time to be considered. The web-site is

SKUSA Super Nationals Field Opened to 80 For Tag Jr
Growing waiting list prompts Junior expansion, TaG Master
and TaG Cadet now sold out
The 14th annual Superkarts! USA SuperNationals in Las Vegas
is gearing up to be the largest field in the history of the
great event, as entries continue to pour into SKUSAs
offices. With the Stock Moto categories enjoying amazing
numbers, the TaG classes have made the biggest moves over
the past couple of weeks as TaG Master and TaG Cadet have
already sold out with over six weeks still to go. Likewise,
the interest in the TaG Junior class has not let up and will
enjoy a full field of competitors for the November 17-21
event as after hitting its initial target of 40 entries a
surge in the additions to the wait list has prompted SKUSA
to open the class maximum up to 80 drivers. This will be the
largest Junior race of the year and should not be missed.
We couldnt be happier with the excitement that is being
generated in our TaG classes, and especially our new TaG
Cadet class, which will have a full field of 40 drivers,
offered SKUSA President Tom Kutscher. This class will be a
foundation of our program heading into the future, as it
represents a young drivers first opportunity to become part
of the SKUSA family. The continuing arrival of wait list
confirmations for the TaG Junior class follows this trend as
we are enjoying great participation from the sports youngest
pilots. I was happy with 40 Juniors, but the wait list kept
growing, so we made the decision to use up the final spot on
the daily schedule to expand the class to 80 entries.
With TaG Junior now closing in on 80 drivers, the TaG Master
and TaG Cadet fields are set. Both categories have reached
their 40-kart limits, with TaG Cadet being the biggest
surprise. After being launched by SKUSA at the start of the
year as part of the Pro Tour, there has been massive
interest in the class. Kutscher has confirmed the class for
the Pro Tour in 2011, so it is expected that many families
are taking the opportunity to become familiar with the motor
package ahead of next years Pro Tour schedule. The class
utilizes the Vortex MiniRok powerplant, and Vortex has
stepped up to offer a supported ride at the 2011 Rok Cup
International Finals for this years class champion.
Likewise, the title winner of next years SKUSA Pro Tour will
win the ride for the 2012 edition of the world championship
race.
As entries continue to pour in, the available discounted
hotel room block at the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino is
likewise almost sold out, so anyone wishing to enjoy the
benefits of staying just steps away from the track should
act fast. SKUSA has even negotiated a new deal with the Rio
to lower the hotels flat incidental fee from $50 per night
per room to $50 per week, easing the financial burden on
their racers and guests. SKUSA had already negotiated
special discounted rates for the weekday and weekend stays,
with the rate average coming in at $81 per night. The group
discount code when booking a room is SRNATS0, but the
easiest way to get set up is through the
www.superkartsusa.com website. Simply head to the
SuperNationals section of the site and select the Hotel and
Accommodations option in the Menu.

Gold Rush Hits Blue Max For Round Four
This weekend the Gold Rush series heads into
Blue Max Kart Club in Davis, Ca this weekend for round four.
Point’s battles starting to heat up the five race series
as
Kinsmen Kart Club will close out the season awarding money
to the Championship winners. Entry numbers continue to run
high in all divisions providing some of the best racing seen
all year, and drawing some of the best teams and drivers for
a regional series in over a decade.
Kid Karts have been perhaps the biggest
surprise with 15 karts averaging in the young development
division. Tomas Mejia has been the standout winning the
first three races and taking a commanding lead in points,
Mejia will be looking to sweep the series but will be
challenged closely
by
Brandon Apodaca and
Stephon Daniel as
the second place in the division points is being closely
contended by the top five.
Hunter Corbitt has
been very impressive
during the Gold rush in the Jr 1 divisions leading points in
HPV-1 and
second in points to Curt
Paul in the Jr Comer category by 27 points. Corbitt recently
bounced back in Comer with a win at Stockton after a dismal
finish cost him points at Atwater. IKF National Champion
Paul is looking for a win at Blue Max to
for a chance to secure the title, while
Garrett Dixon has a win on his mind in the HPV-1 class in
hopes to run down the Corbitt before the last round.
HPV-2 will be one of classes closely watched
as the top three are all within 5 points for the
Championship. Austin Elliott
holds the top
position in points with two wins and one bad finish in
Atwater which have allowed
both Jarred Campbell and
Sonny Cervelli to draw close, both looking for their first
win. Cervelli will be the driver to watch at Blue Max as a
solid finish puts him in the driver seat heading to his home
track Kinsmen for the series closer.
Sr Superpipe also a
close battle to watch as David Vasquez newly graduating to
the Sr class for the Gold Rush series holds on
to the points lead
with a 32 point advantage over Brett Felkins. Vasquez still
looking for his first win while Felkins bad finish in
Stockton cost him many points.
A good finish by
Vasquez could make it tough for Felkins to bounce back. 3rd
through 7th in points are all
separated by 37
points as the top
ten will once again be very closely contested. Winner of the
Yamaha Race will
receive a
free entry to the October Clone Fest race at Blue Max in
October courtesy of WestCoastKarters.com.
The Clone class continues to be the race to
watch at the end of the day as the underpowered karts put on
quite the show while filling the fence line. Rob Nascimento
leads points over
Kelsey Nilsson by
ten points as the two get set to do battle at Blue Max.
Winner of the Clone race
will
receive an entry
to the October Clone
Fest at Davis
with
another entry going to the driver that can
make up the most positions in the race. In addition to a
Clone Fest Entry, WestCoastKarters.com will be offering an
additional $100 to any driver that can win from starting in
the last position on the grid.

weekend starts 8am Friday morning with trailer parking and

9-24-10 Red
Line Oil Karting Championship Race #8 Action
With the
threat of rain, the Red Line Oil Karting Championship's
Northern California Rotax Challenge's second visit this year
to the storied Kinsmen Kart Club track in Dixon saw some
great racing by the end of the day. Rain interrupted the
morning practice for about an hour, but once the track dried
out the rain stayed away and the race day even ended with
some great sunshine. Thirty-one Nor Cal Rotax Challenge
karts joined the Kinsmen Kart Club and provided the race
fans to some exciting racing.
Rotax Masters / Masters Lights
The combined Masters and Masters Light classes produced the
largest Rotax race group of the day with eleven karts. In
Qualifying, Andre Eriksen (Masters) took the pole over Mert
Solis (Light), Steve Weiss (Light), Francis Thomas
(Masters), and Peter Breidinger (Masters). In the ten lap
Pre-Main, Eriksen took the lead into turn oine with Solis
right on his tail. Four karts right behind tangled which put
Light points leader Mary Beth Wilson on the sidelines along
with Weiss. Eriksen drove an errorless race and Solis was
not able to mount any sort of challenge on his way to the
second place finish and the Light win. Peter Breidinger came
home third followed by Jerry Pretti (Light) and Corey
Mitchell (Light). In the fifteen lap Main, again Eriksen
took the lead into turn one with Breidinger right on his
tail and Solis having to give up one position. Breidinger
was improving as the day went on, but he was also not able
to mount a challenge on the leading Masters points leader.
Solis was close behind in third and was not challenged for
the Light class lead as Jerry Pretti came home fourth
overall some five seconds back. Mitchell pressured Pretti
the whole way and took fifth overall, third in Light. Coming
home sixth overall and third in the Masters class was
Francis Thomas in his first ever kart race, great job
Francis. With the win, Eriksen has wrapped up the class
championship in the Masters class. Masters Light points
leader Mary Beth Wilson came home fourth in class with Solis
gaining some valuable points to help keep his championship
hopes alive.
Rotax Mini Max
Another strong field of nine karts took to the track with
points leader Michael Avansino taking the pole over second
place points driver Michael Michoff. In their third Mini Max
race, Annie and Toni Breidinger took the next two spots on
the grid with Gino Gigliotti in fifth. In the Pre-Main,
Avansino and Michoff diced back and forth the entire ten
laps with Avansino taking the win less than a tenth of a
second ahead of Michoff. Annie Breidinger stayed close to
come home third less than a second behind the two front
runners with Gigliotti, Justin Yanez and Scott Huffaker
battling for the fourth through sixth positions. The start
of the Main was a repeat of the Pre-Main with Avansino
taking the lead closely followed by Michoff and Annie
Breidinger close behind. As in the Pre-Main, these three
karts pulled away from the rest of the field. With less than
five laps to go, Michoff made an outstanding pass just after
the hairpin and took over the lead. On lap thirteen, the
lead pack came up to lap the ninth place kart with Michoff
passing on the left and Avansino trying to make the pass on
the right as they went into turn two. As Michoff made his
pass, the ninth place kart moved over to the right a bit and
Avansino had to swerve to avoid contact and spun, eventually
re-entering the race in sixth place. Michoff was able to
cruise home for the win with Annie Breidinger one second
behind, Gigliotti third, followed by Yanez and Huffaker. In
post-race tech, a disqualification and subsequent protest
has put the race results in the hands of Race Director Ric
Shaw. The results of this class are unofficial until the
protest is handled.
Senior Rotax, Cambrian Go Karts Junior Rotax & DD2
With ten total karts between the three classes, this race
group had a split start with the two DD2 karts starting some
100 yards in front of the Senior/Junior group. In
Qualifying, Andre Eriksen took the DD2 pole ahead of January
Grove. In the Senior/Junior group, Wes Phillips, making a
rare visit back to the Nor Cal series, took the pole ahead
of Carlos Calderon with junior Brody Zink third, followed by
Raymund Bustamante, Jr. and Amber Friedberg. In the
Pre-Main, Eriksen lead the entire distance to take a two
second win over Grove in the DD2 class. Phillips lead the
Senior field at the start and went on to a controlled three
second win. But the real battle was right behind Phillips
with six karts all running in a pack and all finishing
within one second of each other. Calderon was hounded the
entire way by Bustamante with series newcomer Andrew
Colombini working his way up the third. Colombini then took
over second and was right on the bumper of Calderon.
Colombini tired a pass going into the last turn and a lot of
bumping and grinding resulted with Calderon coming out ahead
to take second in the Senior class followed by the Junior
Brody Zink, Bustamante, Colombini and Sean McDonald.
In the Main, Eriksen and Grove battled the entire race in
DD2 with Grove taking the lead at one point. Then Eriksen
made a pass to retake the lead and race home to take a three
tenths of a second win over Grove. In the Senior/Junior
race, Calderon took the lead going into turn one with
Phillips and Bustamante right behind. The class points
leader lead the race for a few laps but by mid-race,
Phillips made a pass coming out of the hairpin to take a
lead he would never give up. Bustamante took advantage of
Phillip's pass to squeeze by and take over second place with
Calderon falling back to third. At the checkered flag,
Phillips took the win, Bustamante took second as Calderon
could not mount a challenge and had to settle for third
followed by McDonald, Zink (first in Junior) and Colombini.
In only his third race in the Rotax series, Colombini has
shown very well and is now tasting the potential of a class
win in the near future.
The results of this race can be found on the Race #8 MyLaps
Times Link page at www.norcalrotax.com or at
www.mylaps.comunder the heading "Kinsmen Club Race". Please
note the results of the Mini Max Main are unofficial until
further notice.

California Rotax Challenge race is Sunday, September 26th
when the series returns to the Jim Russell International
Karting Center at Infineon Raceway. For more information

14th Annual Skip Barber Karting Scholarship Shout out on
December 3-6, Mazda Raqceway Laguna Seca
There's just one week left to apply for the 14th Annual Skip
Barber Karting Scholarship Shoot-Out that will be held on
December 3-6 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. During the four
days karters are evaluated for not only their on-track speed
and consistency but how they take and apply feedback and
perform off-track. Karters judged to have the greatest
potential receive scholarships to compete in the BFGoodrich/Skip
Barber National Presented by Mazda or one of the Skip Barber
Regional Race Series. The Skip Barber Karting Scholarship
Shoot-out is a critical component of the fully integrated
Mazda-powered motorsports ladder system now in place in the
U.S.: Skip Barber, USF2000, and Star Mazda.
This shoot-out is the largest and single most important
event for karters transitioning into race cars. Karting
associations who would like to assist their karters in
taking the next step up the motorsports ladder can forward
the following link to aspiring race car drivers. When the
entry list for the shootout is announced, we will also be
including the hometown of each karter as well as the karting
association they came from, if applicable. The deadline to
apply is September 30, 2010.

RLOKC Race Day #9 Schedule and Drivers Notes
1. Track
configuration is Reverse Sprint track.
2. Fire extinguishers are required in each racers pit,
minimum five pound size for each kart in the pit area. This
is required by the county fire marshal and it was noticed
last race that there were very few fire extinguishers
visible. Buy one and make sure it is out on your work
tables.
3. Make sure you have ground cover under your karts. We have
been seeing more and more people forgetting to put ground
cover down under their karts. No fuel spillage is allowed
directly onto the asphalt or ground at Infineon Raceway,
this the reason for the ground cover.
4. The points for the September 19th Dixon race will be
added to the MyLaps points chart this coming Saturday night.
5. Rotax Radiator Tape Note: Make sure that any tape used on
the radiator is wrapped completely around the radiator. This
applies to Qualifying and any races. The tape needs to
appear to be one continuous strip of tape. We have been
reminding racers on the grids in the past but these
reminders will go away and looking for proper tape will be
spot checked at the scales in the future. Improper radiator
taping will result in a DQ.
6. Gary Coffman will be working the paddock area this coming
Saturday. He will be in charge of getting all non-kart
support cars out of the paddock and parked in the parking
lot in the back. Only trucks and trailers that racers are
working out of will be allowed to stay in the paddock. This
will help allow those that arrive to practice or set up for
the Sunday race to be able to find a decent pit spot.
7. Again, Saturday practice is 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM with race
pre-registration available until 6:15 PM. Sunday
registration and all spectator sign-ins will happen at the
old Jim Russell office located before the InfineonRaceway
Main gate.

Line Oil Karting Championship preps for September
back-to-back Weekends
With only two
months left in the 2010 Red Line Oil Karting Championship
season, the series looks to back to back races in September.
Several classes still have very close Championship points
standings and this will make the races real nail biters!
The Red Line Oil Rotax Challenge will join the September
Kinsmen Kart Club classes on Sept 19, the Red Line series
racing for the second time at the tough Dixon track. The
last race at Dixon in August had the largest field of Rotax
karts in the history of the track and a large field is
expected again to battle for much needed Championship
points. Practice will be available on Saturday from 9:00 to
5:00 with Sunday raceday to begin with practice at about
8:30.
On September 26, the entire class line up of the Red Line
Oil Karting Championship will return to the Jim Russell
International Karting Center at Infineon Raceway to run the
Reverse Sprint track. Saturday practice will be available
from 12:00 to 6:00. Sunday practice will begin at 8:30 with
racing starting at 10:45.
Some of the tight Championship battles include: Rotax
Mini-Max where Michael Avansino has a slim lead over Michael
Michoff with Gino Ghliotti not far behind. In Junior Rotax,
Bobby Tifft has been the strongest driver in the last couple
of races and is in a position to make a move on leader Brody
Zink. Senior Rotax class has the tightest battle with Carlos
Calderon holding a slim lead over Amber Friedberg and
three-time race winner Raymond Bustamante Jr.
Mini-Max and Senior Rotax have been the most competitive
classes in 2010 with both having four different drivers
winning races. In the Rotax Masters Light class, Mary Beth
Wilson had opened up a good early lead but, already taking
his two throw away races early, defending champ Andrea
Delfanti has been in the catch up mode and needs wins in the
last three races to have any chance of repeating. In 80
Masters, three time class champ Tom Nelson has a new
challenger in Greg Richter, who is coming off his first win
in August and now has the confidence that he can challenge
for season ending honors.

Leesman, Alcorn, Smith and Kelley Among Champions in Prokart
Challenge North Program
Nine championships decided after final round over Labor Day
weekend in Sonoma
The third year of the Superkarts! USA ProKart Challenge
North program completed on September 4 with the sixth round
of the 2010 season. Following the event, the championship
standings for the nine categories were tabulated with the
champions decided. The series continues to call the Jim
Russell International Karting Center home, contesting five
of the six events at the Sonoma, California facility with
the only event outside the Napa Valley region the PKC West
Coast Shootout in Santa Maria last month.
With the new Stock Moto ladder system that Superkarts! USA
implemented for the 2010 season, the regular Stock Moto
division broke into two groups the headline S1 Pro Stock
Moto and S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto. Coming into the PKC North
finale, former ICC front-runner Fritz Leesmann showed the
most consistency on the year in S1 that saw five different
winners in six events. Leesmann led the way in the standings
from the beginning with the feature win at the season
opener, adding three runner-up finishes heading into the
final round. Poised for his second victory at round six,
Leesmann was leading the way until five laps to go when his
carburetor came off his Honda powerplant. Scoring enough
points up to that point in the event, Leesmann scored the
title championship. Brett Buckwalter the 2009 TaG Senior
champion made his return to shifter kart racing in S1 as
well, scoring second in the standings with four podium
finishes despite no victories. Inaugural Stock Moto series
champ Jason Toft completed 2010 third in the order with a
win at round four.
Scoring his second series championship was Matt Alcorn, as
he took home the inaugural S2 title. The S4 (Stock Moto
Heavy) champion in 2008, Alcorn was the driver to beat early
on this year. Sweeping the opening round, Alcorn ended the
season with two total wins and three additional trips to the
podium. Alcorn edged-out round three winner Neil Joseph for
the title, with Cameron Pringle scoring two wins in five
events to sit third in the final tally.
After starting out the year poorly in TaG Senior, Bobby
Kelley bounced back to rip off five podium finishes
including two wins in the final two events to score the
championship. The Riverside, CA driver scored a solid win at
the PKC West Coast Shootout to move into the point lead
heading into the final round. Over the Labor Day weekend
event, Kelley stamped his name on the trophy with the
victory. Larry Fraser was the early standings leader,
scoring two wins in the first three events. The second half
of the season was downhill for the veteran as fourth was his
best finish, including a DNS at the North vs. South battle.
Like Kelley, Jess Peterson had a great second half, standing
on the podium three times in the last four races to end up
third overall.
Coming off of a championship in the PKC South program, Jeff
Smith made his PKC North debut in 2010 and nearly posted a
perfect season in the S4 Master Stock Moto division. Smith
took home the main event victory at all six events, earning
the pole award four times and losing only two of the 12 heat
races. Certainly his mark left on the 2010 season will be
hard to match in future editions of the PKC North program.
The fight for second came down to the final laps, with Alex
Keith able to edge Jim Inglebright for the runner-up
position in the standings. In the new S3 Novice Stock Moto
class, Chris Yettito took the inaugural title over Todd
Wilson.
Former two-time vice-champion in the G1 category, Ethan
Wilson made the move over to TaG Master with success.
Starting the year out with the victory, Wilson scored three
more wins and a runner-up spot on the podium to score the
highest points on the year for the championship. 2009
champion Jeff Deehan challenged Wilson throughout the
season, but came up 45 points short in his title defense.
Arizona driver Peter Workum ended up third in the standings
following his three podium trips on the season.
Kathryn Cornell became the first female champion in PKC
North history as she dominated the HPV-2 Junior division.
Standing on the podium in five of the six events, her two
wins on the season and consistency up front helped her earn
the title over Jack Freese and Daniel Langon who also scored
the S5 Junior Stock Moto championship. Cornell battled for
the TaG Junior title, as well. However, Deven Sanchez was
more consistent down the stretch in order to score the class
championship. Sanchez won the opening round and stayed out
of trouble the remainder of the season to score the title.
Cornell and Austin Dement each earned two main event
victories, settling for second and third in the final
standings.
Now that the 2010 season for the PKC North program is
wrapped up, the drivers will be able to accept their awards
at the season-ending banquet, scheduled for October 16. The
ProKart Challenge staff is currently finalizing the details
of the awards ceremony with the location to be announced in
the near future.
Also on tap is the PKC South banquet award ceremonies
rescheduled to Sunday, September 26 at The Grand/Long Beach
Event Center from 2pm to 6pm. The location is the same as in
2009 with information on the event and tickets available on
the SKUSA website. Also building is the anticipation for the
SKUSA Pro Tour finale, the SKUSA SuperNationals XIV, at the
Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on November
17-21.

9-13-10 Former Karter, Pitta caps the season
off with another win
On
9-11 car number 11 made his presence known at All American Speedway's
twin 44's
In main event number one Pitta would start 3rd. Once again Pitta stalked
the field and one by one the 11 car took it to the front. On lap 22
Pitta made his move for first and started to pull away from the field. A
late race caution bunched the field back up. Pitta got the short end of
the stick on the restart and would ultimately end 2nd.
"It's a shame, I really wanted to sweep the night. We had the car but
that's racing and it is what it is."
With a 4 car invert for the second main event, the team made some
adjustments where they once again would start 3rd. After running the
majority of the race in the top 4, on lap 35, with the top guys putting
on a show for the crowd, Pitta was able to start 2nd on the restart.
Making it a 9 lap shoot out! You can bet Pitta was ready for redemption
from the first race. Juan made the pass on the outside and drove his way
to another great victory in the final points race of the year. The
energy from the crowd was unreal making it a emotional night.
"I heard my spotter say "Cousin give me all you got!".... "We fought
hard for this win and I made sure to leave it all on the track tonight."
" That one was for baby K!"
With BET's resent documentary show "Changing Lanes" airing, Juan has
gotten his fair share of "what happened" questions. Pitta says.." All I
can do is answer back with wins and prove to people i'm a great driver."
"My family believes in my ability and that all that matters to me."
Politics will fall into place.
In the last three races of the season Pitta was able to score two 2nd
place finishes and a 1st, securing him a 5th place spot in the All
American Speedway Track Points.
Juan Pitta Racing would like to thank its sponsors Cascar Machine Shop,

Superkarts USA Announces 2011 Pro Tour Schedule
Sophomore circuit expected to enjoy significant increase in
participation
On all accounts, the inaugural Superkarts! USA Pro Tour is
being considering a great success by the organization,
thanks to solid participation and incredibly exciting
competition. SKUSAs return to national series competition in
2010 materialized thanks to the passionate requests by many
of their racers for more big races which fueled the
development of the SpringNationals and SummerNationals.
These two new events were then partnered with the famed
SuperNationals to present a three-weekend (five-race) Pro
Tour circuit for this year. With a limited number of
classes, loads of track time and a focus on family fun and
enjoyment, the inaugural Pro Tour has been extremely well
received. Fast-forwarding to 2011, discussion regarding next
years program began earlier in the season using feedback
from racers, and SKUSA expects a significant increase in
participation next year if the recent confirmations by new
drivers, shops and teams are any indication. As a result, it
is with excitement and high expectations that Superkarts!
USA releases their schedule for the 2011 Pro Tour.
The season will begin with the second annual SpringNationals,
set for the April 29 May 1 weekend, which will be held once
again at the Jim Russell International Karting Center at
Infineon Raceway. The wine country regions location just
north of the beautiful city of San Francisco makes it a
popular destination for racers and their families alike, and
the facility is one of the most picturesque in the country.
The fact that its simply one of the finest racetracks in the
country makes it the perfect choice for the Pro Tour opener.
After kicking things off in northern California, the next
round of the program the second running of the
SummerNationals will be held on July 15-17 at a venue that
will be announced before the end of this year. The inaugural
SummerNationals was held at USA International Raceway this
past July, drawing the likes of NASCAR stars Jamie McMurray
and AJ Allmendinger during their only open weekend of the
summer. Next years race promises to be even bigger, thanks
to the growing support of the Pro Tour. The continuing
expansion of SKUSAs regional platform will certainly provide
a larger pool of karters from which to attract Pro Tour
competitors.
The 15th annual SuperNationals will once again anchor the
Pro Tour schedule next fall, bringing SKUSAs finest racers
to the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for the
biggest race in North American karting on November 16-20,
2011. This race has exploded over the past two years, and
SKUSAs constant focus on improvement has made each event a
new benchmark for American kart racing competition.
The following is the official schedule for the 2011
Superkarts! USA Pro Tour:
April 29-May 1: SpringNationals Infineon Raceway Sonoma, CA
July 15-17: SummerNationals TBA
Nov. 16-20: SuperNationals Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino
Las Vegas, NV
Im really satisfied with the results of our first season of
Pro Tour racing, and the best part has been the feedback of
the drivers and teams, offers Tom Kutscher, Superkarts! USA
president. Weve been able to bring together the finest
drivers from our regional series, plus weve enjoyed the
participation of many racers from other organizations, which
is excellent. We wanted to focus on a select number of
classes and then make sure that each weekend was an
enjoyable experience for our customers. We offered lots of
track time and a relaxed atmosphere, and tried to take care
of our racers with complimentary post-race BBQs and
immediate payouts of the purse. Our goal is always to have
our racers leave with a smile, all wanting to come to our
next event. I think we did that with this years Pro Tour,
and I cant wait to start it all again with the
SpringNationals next April!
One of the priorities for the 2011 schedule was to avoid
conflicts with other series, and after many phone calls and
meetings, Im happy to say that we are looking good for next
year, added Kutscher. All of these races are good for the
industry, and if we keep putting them on top of each other,
were mostly hurting the shops and teams by forcing them to
make a choice instead of allowing them to attend as many
events as they can support. Id like to thank my fellow
promoters for discussing their programs with us so that we
could lock in our dates, free of conflict.
As was the case in 2010, the Spring and Summer Pro Tour
events will feature a three-day format, with practice on
Friday and complete race days on Saturday and Sunday with
qualifying, heat races and a main. The SuperNationals will
have an extra day each of practice and racing competition.
SKUSA remains focused on cost control, and will again be
restricting the pre-race usage of the official track layout,
both Infineon Raceway and the facility that will eventually
be confirmed for the SummerNationals in July.
SKUSA is excited by the prospects for the 2011 Pro Tour, in
light of the tremendous support being shown towards many of
the racing categories for this years SuperNationals. The
staggering explosion of the S4 Stock Moto Master class is
surely a positive precursor of the numbers that SKUSA will
see on the Pro Tour in 2011. As well, the continuing
development of the S1 Pro and S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto classes
will likely result in more than 20 drivers in S1 and likely
over 30 in S2, all vying for the national #1 plate in each
of the classes. With the TaG Senior category already strong
and expected to build, it is also the growth of the S5
Junior Stock Moto and TaG Cadet classes that have Kutscher
particularly optimistic.
Weve brought three new Junior classes to the SKUSA program
over the past couple of years, and Im really pleased with
how they have developed the S5 and TaG Cadet categories in
particular, Kutscher continued. These drivers will be the
future stars of Superkarts! USA, similar to how guys like
Alex Speed developed from the 80cc Junior class. We already
have more than 25 entries in the TaG Cadet class for the
SuperNationals, which is just another sign that these
classes have taken root and will grow to be the foundation
of our program.
SKUSA will run four Stock Moto classes on the Pro Tour in
2011, as it did this year, and will also run at least three
of the TaG classes in TaG Senior, Junior and Cadet. The TaG
Master category did not receive much support in 2010, but
the SuperNationals grid is expected to be filled for Las
Vegas, so Kutscher will give the TaG Master drivers the
opportunity to pledge their support during the off-season.
If they step up with a minimum of 20 pre-entries for the
SpringNationals, Kutscher confirms that they will be kept on
the class line-up. The following list is the tentative class
structure for the 2011 SKUSA Pro Tour:
S1 Pro Stock Moto 15 years of age and older 385 lbs A
License only
S2 Semi-Pro Amateur Stock Moto 15 years of age and older 395
lbs B License only
S4 Stock Moto Master 30 years of age and older 405 lbs B or
C License
S5 Junior Stock Moto 12-15 years of age 340 lbs D License
TaG Senior 15 years of age and older B or C License
TaG Junior 12-15 years of age 320 lbs D License
TaG Cadet 9-12 242 lbs D License
*TaG Master 30 years or older - B or C License (minimum
pre-entry required)
These classes represent the immediate future of Superkarts!
USA, and we are committed to supporting their growth,
Kutscher confirmed. I believe in the importance of the TaG
Cadet and S5 classes in building a platform of growth and
steady driver graduation, and well be running both of these
classes on our flagship ProKart Challenge North and South
series in 2011. These classes are here to stay. I am looking
forward to seeing them grow over the coming years.
SKUSA is now working to confirm the venue for the
SummerNationals, and will be releasing this information
before the end of the year. The title sponsorship of the
2011 Pro Tour is still available; any interested parties are
asked to contact the SKUSA head office.

9-9-10 NNKC Championship Race #6 at DESERT
PARK RACEWAY
What a weekend for Championship Kart Racing at DPR!!! The
weather couldn't have been better at 88 degrees with hardly
any wind.
55
karts came out to run track #3 over the Labor Day Weekend.
The track was busy on Saturday as well with many drivers
coming to get a little extra practice in before the race.
Sr/Jr 2 Box Stock Clones
hit the track first this time out.
It was a good show of Clone force on Labor Day weekend. 14
Clones in all to start off a good day of racing. David
Schilt stole the day with an undisputed first place by
walking away from the entire pack. Next up was a battle
between first time Clone driver Derrick Delong and regular
Clone driver's Terry West, Becky Knapp, Jamie West, Travis
Look, and Jr Clone Logan Wyman. All six were fighting for
podium positions and finishing no more than 3 tenths of a
second apart. The pack was nose to bumper the entire race,
each rarely risking the chance of making a move that would
give up a position. In the end Travis took 2nd, Logan 3rd,
Jamie 4th, Becky 5th, Terry 6th, and Derrick 7th. It was a
tough battle for all. Next race will be for the Club Clone
Championship between Leader Terry West (1,025 points) and
Dave Schilt (1021 points). Whoever places in front of the
other will be the CHAMPION! No pressure...... Story by TL.
(4)
Jr 1-2 Cycle
kids
came out to improve their chances at a top finishing order
as the year winds down. Nothing was different for the #11
kart of Jeremy Kay. Doing what he has done all year long
(being consistent) and improving from race to race, he
showed why he is the points leader and dominant yet again
start to finish taking pole and winning all heats and main.
Great Job to Jeremy for all but securing his 1st club
championship! Turbo Sombatsiri would have a great day as
well, starting off-pole but having a little bad luck in the
first heat. He would regroup later and take home a solid
2nd position. Connor Van Cott would have a strong day as
well finishing in 2nd place in both heats. In the main, he
would bring home his kart in 3rd overall. The 4th place
kart of Buddy Browning would push really hard for his
position throughout the day. Buddy is a new driver to NNKC
and looks to be a keeper for the future of the sport.
Formula 80 Senior
karts roared onto the track next.
It's
been a crazy year as the class has really only seen 2
winners all year. But old Masters driver Mark Nason decided
he had enough of the younger Mike Botelho running P1. Mark
came out strong with a fast pole run. He would dominate
heat 1 easily, out distancing himself by 5 seconds over Cody
McKinney. That is until class points leader Mike Botelho
was able to hang on his bumper in the second heat. The two
would finish neck and neck at the line. That brought up the
main event. Nason would have the lead for 12 laps with
Botelho in tow. 2 laps from the end, Mike Jr would make the
pass on Nason and win yet another F-80 Senior race. Mike Jr
all but guaranteed himself a Championship in this class.
McKinney and Gerry Williams would battle throughout the
day. These two run very similar times to one another,
therefore creating a good competition between the two. They
happen to be best friends of the track as well. Cody would
end up 3rd with Gerry finishing 5th. Ben Fisher would end
up in the 4th position as he was able to fend off the late
charge by Gerry.
Besides the Clones, NNKC's
TaG Novice
class
has been the biggest surprise of the year. What started out
as an awesome 6-8 kart field at the beginning of the year
has turned in to a 14 kart battle for rookie honors.
Unfortunately for all the other drivers, they have seen the
same kart win all 6 races. Usually when this happens with a
Novice driver, we would pluck that driver from the field and
get him into a Sr or Masters class. Well Matt Koerner
doesn’t qualify for TaG Masters because of his age and/or
weight and the club doesn't currently have a Sr class
available with drivers. So Matt has stayed in the class and
drove his rear end off all year long. There were a couple
times when he was in jeopardy of not winning, but he is
smooth and knows how to stay up front. We have 3 father/son
duo's racing in this class this year. The Koerner’s (Matt
and Tom), the Yochum’s (Chris and Dave) and the Doyle’s
(Sean and Rob). This cements the fact that we, NNKC, are a
family oriented racing club. Aside from Matt winning the
race, his father Tom would come in 2nd followed by another
good performance by Don Faris in 3rd. Faris would take over
the 3rd spot in the standings over Javier Avila, who had a
disappointing finish in 13th. X drivers Brad Bolton and
Bruce Garafola would race well and finish in 4th and 6th,
respectively. The club's TaG Senior and Masters Programs
should get a big boost next year with the addition of 80% of
these drivers!
(3)
Kid Karts
came out
to play under the sun. Bank Sombatsiri would grab an early
pole from the other kids of Gavin Van Cott and Nolan Wyman.
First heat would have Wyman win by 49 seconds. In the
second heat, it was a bit more contested as Van Cott would
hold the lead till 2 laps from the end. Wyman would charge
by and win by 17 seconds. The main would see Wyman take
control again and finish in first. Van Cott would be able
to hold off Sombatsiri for 2nd place, with Sombatsiri coming
in 3rd.
Oh what a year its been for the
TaG Masters
class.
Dan Harris would take pole over Brian Rivera by a 1/2
second. The first heat saw Dan beat Brian to the line by
1.5 seconds followed by Derrick DeLong and Curt Baker. The
second heat would see Brian win the heat by holding off Curt
by 1 second with Harris and DeLong lurking in the shadows.
The main event saw something much different than the first
part of the day. Dan Harris would find incredible power and
coast to an easy victory over Rivera by 6.6 seconds. In the
back of Brian was Baker and DeLong having a great battle for
3rd. Baker, the veteran, would be able to hold off DeLong
while giving Rivera all he had left in the tank. John
Morgan, a new Masters driver with now 6 races under his
belt, would finish 5th with Jim Foff in 6th. Harris and
Rivera are all tied up with 1,016 points each. Like the Sr
Clone class, whichever driver passes the finish line first
in the main event will be your CHAMPION!!!
Formula 80 Masters saw
Mark
Nason on pole by almost a full second over Cody McKinney. As
Heat 1 would see Nason runaway, Cody and Gerry Williams
would battle hard for 2nd. Cody would end up
holding off Gerry at the line. Steve Dow had a solid
performance finishing 1.5 seconds behind Gerry. Heat 2
invert again saw Nason put his kart up front with a holeshot
from P3. Cody would lose a gear and for the last 2-3 laps
and would drive the kart in 3rd gear!!! Ben
Fisher would be able to catch McKinney on the last lap and
beat him to the line for 2nd place! Main event
again saw nothing new as Nason would runaway from the pack
collecting another victory and the F-80 Masters
Championship. The battle was for 2nd again, with
Cody and Gerry racing bumper to bumper the entire race. No
positions were swapped this time as Cody was able to hold
off Gerry for the second finishing position. Steve Dow
would make a late pass on Ben Fisher on lap 9 to secure 4th
place. Story by MN.
NNKC
would like to thank all the racers for coming out and making
this weekend what it was. Race Directing by Ed Diederich
was great and our new backup flagman David Brant Jr was
great as well. Thankx to all the staff workers including
our registration girls and tower lady. They work their
butts off to make this happen. The corner workers are
really stepping up as well too. See everybody for the last
race showdown Oct 3rd!!!

9-6-10 Red
Line Oil Karting Championship Race #7 Recap
Another
beautiful sunny day dawned to help make the racing at the
RLOKC Series that much better. A strong field of 60 drivers
put on a great show of competitive racing with several races
ending in dramatic fashion. The National Track configuration
at the Jim Russell International Karting Center at Infineon
Raceway allowed the karts to really stretch their legs and
show what they have. The Molecule "Dirty Driver" suit
cleaning award went to Corey Mitchell and the Trapeze Arts
"Move of the Race"award went to Barry Lee for his pass at
the finish line in Heat #1 to win the race.
Rotax Masters
For the second race in a row, the Rotax Masters and Masters
Lights classes ran in separate race groups due to the large
entry. The Masters class had eleven drivers, the largest
Rotax Masters class entry in series history. In Qualifying,
Andre Eriksen took the pole ahead of Jerry Pretti and Barry
Lee. In the first Heat, Eriksen took the lead on the started
followed by Lee, Pretti and Cameron Evans. Lee hounded
Eriksen the whole distance and made a couple of pass
attempts at the end of the long straight away. On the last
lap, Barry broke out of the slipstream a few yards from the
finish line to nip Erikson by less than two-hundredths of a
second. Pretti, Evans and Ludovic Racinet came home third,
fourth and fifth. In the second Heat, Eriksen pulled away
just enough at the start to avoid getting zinged at the
finish line. He went on to a slim win over Pretti followed
by Lee, Evans and Racinet. In the fifteen lap Main, Eriksen
took the lead at the green followed by Lee out of turn one.
These two drivers opened up a lead over the rest of the
field and then had their own private battle. But Barry
didn't have another magic pass in him and had to settle for
second followed by Pretti, Evans and Racinet.
Rotax Mini-Max
Michael Avansino took the pole ahead of eight other drivers.
Scott Huffaker was second and Michael Michoff third. As it
would turn out, these three drivers would spend the rest of
the day no more that one foot from each other. In the first
Heat, Avansino took the lead at the green with Huffaker and
Michoff right on Avansino's tail the entire eight lap race.
Gino Gigliotti and Toni Breidinger took fourth and fifth. In
the second Heat, Avansino again took the lead ahead of
Huffacker and Michoff. The three drivers again raced nose to
tail the entire race and Avansino held on to a three-tenths
of a second win ahead of Huffaker, Michoff, Gigliotti and
Colin Dailey. In the Main, the top three drivers stuck
together like glue again with Michoff overtaking Huffacker
at the drop of the green. Avansino was under intense
pressure from Michoff the entire race with Michoff making a
number of tries for the lead. In the end, Avansino just did
not leave the door open enough to give Michoff an opening.
Avansino held off Michoff by just .092 of a second to take
his third Infineon race win in a row. Huffaker played the
patience game in case the leaders tangled, but in the end
had to settle for third place, just two tenths of second
behind the leaders. Annie Breidinger and Colin Dailey got by
Gino to take fourth and fifth while Gino taking sixth with
some poor brakes. For his win, Avansino took home the giant
Sanzaru check and FIFTY dollars in cash.
Rotax Masters Lights and IAME Tag
Four TaG karts joined the ten Masters Light karts to make up
the largest race group of the day. In Qualify, Masters Light
karts took the first 5 spots on the grid lead by Andrea
Delfanti, Mert Solis, Mary Beth Wilsom, Jojo Bayabo and
Jerry Pretti. Top TaG kart was Don Rocci in sixth. In the
first Heat, Delfanti took the green and never looked back
taking a three second victory followed by Solis, Wilson,
Pretti and the top TaG of Branson Eggert. In the second
Heat, Delfanti again took the point at the drop of the green
and was never headed. Solis was third and Michael Torrano
taking fourth overall and first in IAME TaG. Both Wilson and
Eggert fell down the standings when the two came together
near the end of the race. In the Main, Delfanti again took
the lead with Solis, Pretti and Wilson next. The TaG
fortunes changed a lot in the Main with Victor Sinzig
getting his carburetor set right and drove a solid drive to
second overall. Eggert also came through the field and drove
home 3rd overall in the race followed by Solis, Pretti, and
a charging Steve Weiss. Points leader Wilson came home
eightoverall, sixth in the Lights class. The top three IAME
drivers took home IAME parts certificates of $50 (1st), $25
(2nd) and $15 for (3rd) place.
125 Stock Moto and 80 Shifters
The five 125 Motos combined with the five 80 shifters in a
split start race that had good action for first place all
day long. In Qualifying, Steve Cameron took the 125 pole
ahead of Jim Inglebright and Nick Galante while Greg Richter
took the 80 pole ahead of Roger Cornwall and Marc Stanley.
In the first Heat, Inglebright got past Cameron on the start
with Cornwall also getting by Richter to take the 80 lead.
Cameron took the lead back a lap later and half way through
the eight lap race, Inglebright and Galante touched and both
spun as they were exiting turn one. Galante recovered to
take third with Brad Shaffer second and Cameron winning.
Cornwall held his lead over Richter to take the 80 win with
Geoff Provo third. In the second Heat, Cameron took the lead
at the green and went on to the win ahead of Galante and
Shaffer with Richter taking control of the 80 win followed
by Cornwall and Stanley. In the Main, Nick Galante took the
lead at the green with Cameron chasing. This duel went on
for the whole race with Galante not giving Cameron a good
look for a clean pass. Nick held on to take the win and with
it the GoPro Hero camera. Steve Cameron came home 2nd
followed by a recovered Inglebright. In the 80 portion of
the race, Richter again took the lead at the start but was
pressured the entire race by Cornwall. In the end, Greg took
the win with Roger one second back and Marc Stanley another
second back.
Rotax DD2
The DD2 class was a second GoPro feature class with seven
drivers entered. Michael Ostrowski took the pole ahead of
Bronson Eggert and class points leader January Grove. In the
first Heat, Ostrowski took the lead at the green and held a
steady but slim lead to win the race over Eggert and Grove.
In the second Heat, Michael again took the lead at the start
with Grove sneaking by at the start to take second ahead of
the young Eggert and that is how they finished the race. In
the Main, Ostrowski again took the early lead with Grove
very close behind the entire race. Eggert ran third until
kart problems sidelined him turning over third place to
Andre Eriksen. In the end, Ostrowski took the win, two
seconds ahead of Grove with Eriksen third and Adam
Fichtelman fourth. For the win, Ostrowski took home the
GoPro Hero camera.
Senior and Junior Rotax
Repeating the Dixon race the previous race, the three Junior
drivers combined with the six Senior karts for the race.
This combination made for some great racing and allowed the
Juniors to challenge some of the Senior drivers during the
race. In Qualifying, Carlos Calderon took the pole ahead of
Dixon winner Raymond Bustamante Jr and Amber Friedberg.
Bobby Tifft was the fastest Junior in fourth position with
Joshua Feiber starting in the fifth position. In the first
Heat, Calderon took the early lead with Friedberg right on
his tail. The two points leading drivers went back and forth
with Amber getting the upper hand at the end to take the win
over Calderon with Bustamante third. Bobby Tifft took fourth
and the Junior win with Joshua Feiber coming home seventh
ahead of points leader Brody Zink. In the second Heat, again
Calderon took the initial lead with Friedberg challenging
and again Amber found the way by to take the win ahead of
Sean McDonald with Calderon coming home third. Tifft was
fifth overall and first in Junior with Feiber coming home
seventh overall.
The Main proved to have the most exciting finish of the day.
Amber and Carlos fought for the lead early on with Calderon
getting back into the lead spot. Amber then took over the
lead mid race with Calderon taking the lead back with just a
few laps left. Again Amber regained the lead. On the last
lap, Calderon and Amber battled coming out of tic-tac-toe
with Calderon taking the lead and Sean McDonald also getting
by into second. Only three turns later, Carlos dropped a
rear wheel and Sean and Amber both sped by. Sean held the
point to take a very slim win (by just .017 of a second) to
win his first Senior feature. Friedberg came home second,
Calderon third and Andrew Colombini fourth. In the Junior
race, Tifft fell back at the start but made a few passes to
get up to fifth overall with Brody Zink right behind him.
With 5 laps left in the race, Tifft was making a pass on
Colombini when the two touched and Tifft went spinning. This
left Zink in the Junior lead with Feiber right on is tail.
Zink went on to win ahead of Joshua.

9-6-10 LAKC
Race 7 Recap
The Los
Angeles Kart Club held race #7 of their series in
conjunction with the Gatorz Karting Cup. Together the
shootout made for great racing and a spike in entries for
everyone evolved. The combining of Southern California's two
Rotax series produced large fields (160 entries) and rave
reviews from drivers in both organizations. Rotax classes
were run as part of the LAKC’s schedule of events, the Rotax
racers benefitted from additional track time in the form of
two eight-lap heat races and a twenty-lap final.
Spread over two days, the race included a fifteen-minute hot
pit qualifying session on Saturday afternoon before a
catered dinner by Blue Agave was provided for all of the
LAKC racers. Sunday would kick off with morning warmup and
the first of two heat races. The rest of the LAKC classes
maintained their normal race program, but I suspect after
the success of last months pea pick format we might see that
again some time soon. The CalSpeed Karting Circuit was run
in the clockwise direction, utilizing the “Grande”
configuration. After suffering through triple digit heat all
week long everyone was relieved that the So-Cal summer
cooled off for the weekend by 20 degrees. A light breeze
also helped to make for a perfect weekend of karting in the
southland, something that LAKC and Gatorz have had some less
than desirable luck with all season.
Batting first on the day was the TAG/PRD Spec Sr. classes.
Sean Cricca was the pole sitter in TAG, and ran the best
time of both classes with a 50.473. Devin Lindsey was fast
qualifier in PRD, just nipping Elliott Skeer by two tenths.
The heat races saw our two pole sitters finish 1-2, running
pretty close lap times. Although scored separately the
overall win is a hug ego boost for any driver in the
combined classes. The sixteen lap final played out in the
same fashion that we saw in the heat race with Cricca and
Lindsey walking away with wins in their individual classes.
Cricca won the overall by just under nine seconds with
Lindsey turning in another solid PRD performance to grab his
class win and 2nd in the combined. Third place went to Jason
Bunch (2nd in his class). Bunch was one of only a few
drivers that gained any positions on track. He worked his
way up from 8th into 3rd.
Junior 1 was batting second on this fine Sunday and it was
the Jake, Christian, and Chase show. Pole went to Ian
Wesolowski who stopped the clock two tenths quicker than
Jake Drew with a time of 57.102. The heat race didn't go as
planned for Wesolowski who dropped back to 5th behind winner
Drew, Chase McDaniel, Christian Brooks and Zack Kurtz. As we
all know by watching the Cadet races any number of drivers
can always win, it just depends on how the chips fall on the
table in the last laps. That rang true in the final as a
trio of karts broke away from the pack. Brooks led the
majority of laps with Drew leading a couple and McDaniel
glued to their bumpers waiting. The leaders encountered lap
traffic that took its toll on McDaniel leaving only Brooks
and Drew to duel for the win. Drew pounced when he could,
but he still had three laps to hold of Brooks if he wanted
the win. Drew held on for his first win of the weekend with
Brooks right there for 2nd place. McDaniel came in well
ahead of the field for 3rd place. Ian Wesolowski battled to
the last lap with brother Troy, Justice Lepe and Anthony
Sawyer. The Wesolowski brothers finished off the podium in
4th and 5th.
Jesse Huaman set the pace in KPV 2 qualifying besting Jake
Craig by .009. Row two was made up of Brandon Reed and
Carlee Taylor who interestingly enough ran the exact same
time in qualifying. Craig scored the heat race win as pole
sitter Huaman got docked in tech; he would start the final
from the rear of the field. Reed got the jump on the start
and led the opening few circuits, but that was short lived
as Craig easily moved to the front and drew away. With Craig
solidly out front and Reed comfortably in 2nd the action was
all behind them Taylor got bounced to the back aster the
first lap and had to work he way back through the field, but
she must have had a problem and didn't get very far in the
16 laps. Our pole sitter bounced back nicely from his
unfortunate heat race DQ and drove a wicked race to finish
in 3rd place only a few seconds behind the 2nd place
finisher Reed. It would have been nice to see Huaman and
Reed go at it for 2nd place but it wasn't meant to be. Chalk
up another KPV2 win for Craig.
It was an up and down day of racing for the Kid Kart
contingent. Justin Hodge put his #99 on the pole, only to
drop out a few laps into the heat race. With the pole sitter
out, Hayden Wagner and Carson Enright sped off to finish 1-2
and looked pretty solid to take the win in the final. With
only a kart or two behind him Hodge had the daunting task of
regaining his throne in only 10 short laps. Enright grabbed
the holeshot to start the final, but Wagner was quick to get
around him and set the pace. The duo set off hoping that
Hodge would get held up in traffic. With three laps
remaining Hodge moved impressively around Enright for 2nd
place. With two to go Hodge was back on top after a power
move on Wagner. Wagner held on for a split second, but Hodge
was turning laps over a second a lap faster. Hodge scored a
fantastic win with what probably the best drive of the day.
Wagner finished closely in 2nd place with Enright in tow.
Preston Anderson and Joseph Daniele finished 4th and 5th,
but were off the pace of the leaders.
Jake Drew, Chase McDaniel and Christian Brooks were at it
again in KPV1, scoring the top three qualifying positions.
The heat race saw all three drivers lead laps and McDaniel
score the win. The final was going to be nothing less than
amazing. With Drew already having a win under his belt,
Brooks and McDaniel were hungry to keep him from doubling
up. McDaniel led the opening circuits with Drew, Justice
Lepe and Brooks all in tow. As Brooks battled with Lepe the
two leaders were able to gain a slight advantage. Brooks
eventually finished in 3rd, with Lepe 4th and Zach Arthur
5th. Up front Drew passed McDaniel for the lead, but only
held it for a few laps. As the event ran its course it was
clear Drew was playing the waiting game and McDaniel would
be toast on the last lap. McDaniel tried everything to keep
Drew behind, but the last lap was all Drew needed to make
his run for the win. Drew scored his second win of the day,
sweeping the Cadet classes. McDaniel ran a great race and
finished in 2nd place.
The Shifters were next, taking the Grande configuration by
storm in the KalGard Challenge. The 125 Open and 125 Stock
Honda battle month after month for shifter supremacy. This
month saw Spec Honda driver Billy Musgrave score the overall
pole. Willy Musgrave was half a second back in Spec, but the
Open Shifter fast qualifier Troy Butts divided the two
Musgraves, and split up the all Honda front row. Billy and
Butts ran a blistering pace in the heat race that no one was
able to match. They went 1-2 and started the final in the
same order they started the heat race. A good performance by
John Chott saw him get by Willy to finish in 3rd. The final
started out with pure chaos as guys grabbed gears and split
the slower karts heading into turn one. Billy Musgrave
dropped the hammer from the get go followed closely by Butts
and Willy Musgrave. Corey Neveau was on the charge, moving
up into 3rd after only a half dozen laps. After losing
ground in the opening laps, Butt's kart was coming in and he
was bring Billy closer and closer into his grasps. By
halfway Billy was running in 2nd and Butts was out new
leader. The ran that way to the finish with Butts earning
the overall win by 4 seconds over Musgrave. Of course Billy
won the spec class over Neveau, Willy, Erik Jackson and Eric
Ortega. Behind Butts in the open class we saw Chott score
2nd and Brain Shafer finish out his day in 3rd. Matt Ostiguy
and Kelson Penn, the lone entrants in the DD-2 class,
finished in that order in the heats and final which were
combined with the 125 shifter classes. Impressively, despite
starting on the last row, Ostiguy and Penn drove up to
eleventh and twelfth overall in their two-speed Rotax karts.
Penn gave Ostiguy a scare early in the contest, but the
veteran DD2 pilot was able to work his way around Penn to
capture another victory.
The lone Micromax entrant was a third-generation driver,
Jimmy Busby III, entering his first race. He shared the
podium with his father, Jim Busby Jr, his grandfather,
former IMSA GTP racer Jim Busby, his uncle David Busby, and
sister Sadye Busby.
Things had gone well for Adam Iavelli throughout MiniMax
qualifying, where he qualified second, and in the two heat
races, which he had won. Top qualifier Nicky Hays was right
on his bumper at the checkered in each heat, and the grid
for the final would be Iavelli leading Hays, Blaine Rocha,
Nick Ramirez, and Gatorz championship leader Royal McKee.
Iavelli maintained his lead at the start of the final while
Hays was shuffled from his off-pole spot back to sixth as
Rocha, McKee, Ramirez and Michael Womack all got by him.
Iavelli, Rocha and McKee all ran in a line, while Ramirez
and Womack battled for fourth until Womack spun and fell to
the back. Rocha latched onto Iavelli’s bumper and waited
until the final lap to make his move for the lead, while
behind, Noah Grey, who had started in seventh, similarly
waited until the final lap to make a pass on McKee for
third. It was a frantic last lap, with Rocha pulling off a
very strong pass in turn four to take the lead and hold it
until the checkered. Iavelli had to settle for second, with
Grey getting past McKee for third and fourth and Ramirez
crossing the line in fifth.
Dakota Dickerson had run the table on this day at Calspeed,
qualifying on the Junior Max pole and easily winning the two
heat races. Jake Craig, Carlee Taylor, Jonathan May and
Breanna Miscione would line up behind Dickerson for the
main, and had battled throughout the day for the final two
podium spots. Dickerson held his lead at the start while
Miscione was the victim of contact and fell down the order
and out of contention. Taylor jumped around Craig to move
into second, but it was short-lived as Craig retook second
position a lap later. After that, all the excitement was
over as Dickerson slowly but steadily opened a gap over the
rest of the field to take the win and sweep the day, with
Craig second, Taylor third, May in fourth and Miscione
working her way back through the field to fifth. Miscione,
however, was given LAKC’s Driver of the Day award ($160
certificate for Gatorz and No Fear gear) after recovering
from her first lap contact.
Senior Max was stacked for the Gatorz / LAKC shootout, with
former Indy 500 Rookie of the Year Phil Giebler taking pole
position ahead of Louie Pagano, John Crow, Matt Ostiguy and
Scott Saunders. It would be Crow, however, that would take
both heat race wins in what were two very exciting eight-lap
races. The main, however, would take a different turn as
Giebler forced his way past Crow on the opening lap, with
their karts coming together a couple of times before Giebler
got ahead and began to pull away. Crow kept Adam Zeen, Louie
Pagano and David Thompson behind him for nine laps until
Zeen got underneath and past Crow, with Pagano and Thompson
coming through as well. Thompson would lose third to Pagano
a couple of laps later before he retired, putting Crow into
fourth.
Behind the leaders, the field broke into several groups that
battled for position throughout the race. Most of those
drivers, however, fell victim to a charging Chandler
Campbell, who started last after a spin in the second heat
race. She charged her way up to seventh at the end of the 20
lap final, setting fast lap of the race in the process. At
the checkered, Giebler won with a gap over Zeen, who had a
similar advantage over third-placed Pagano. Crow finished
fourth, holding off a charging Jeremy Kane who was fifth.
Put a bunch of 405 lb karts on track together in a Gatorz or
LAKC race and the racing is going to be entertaining.
Combine the two and it was no surprise that the Rotax
Masters final, which closed out the day’s racing on Sunday,
had more spectators than any other. Scott Falcone, making
the trip from Colorado, qualified on pole ahead of Jim
Busby, Jr., Steve Dzurilla, Ron Rossetti and Larry
Hayashigawa. Dzurilla, however, would win the first heat,
while David Busby would win the second, with Jim Busby Jr.
second and Falcone third in both of those races.
Anticipation was high for the final.
Things got off to an exciting start with plenty of contact
on the opening lap, which sent fifth-starting Hayashigawa to
the back of the field and out of contention. David Busby
also lost several positions, falling from pole position to
fifth, while his brother Jim Busby Jr. took the lead and
began to pull away from Rossetti and Jarrod Bradley. David
Busby quickly passed Falcone and Bradley to move up to
third, while Falcone took another lap to pass Bradley and
begin to work on catching the leaders.
Halfway through the race, David Busby and Falcone both
passed Rossetti, as Busby, Jr.’s lead began to shrink. With
two laps remaining, David passed Jim in the infield hairpin,
the two karts coming together as both battled for the lead
before David pulled ahead. The battle allowed Falcone to get
close but he was unable to make an attempt on Busby, Jr.’s
second place, and David Busby took the checkered flag ahead
of Jim Busby, Jr. and Falcone. The nineteen-kart field also
had several battles throughout the final, and more than a
little bit of contact, causing the race to be finished under
waving checkered-and-black flags.
While other clubs are struggling to get 50 entries, LAKC
leads the way with a constant 125 plus. With top notch club
racing, both beginner and pro drivers come to test their
skills against the best racers In Southern California. LAKC
regularly sees drivers from neighboring states like Nevada,
